Michelle's ReviewDRAGON HARPER is the sequel to the previous mother-son pairing thatPerformed so nicely on DRAGON'S KIN. Sadly (and there's a lot of "sadly"s in this book) HARPER does not come off as a well-fitting sequel or a new and wondrous addition to the Pern series. It just comes off as an original idea that should have been left alone. The story begins with Kindan-the main character of KIN-defending a female apprentice, which leads to a very well-written swordsman-tutoring sequence that ends much too soon. And just as the reader is getting to love this book, it suddenly changes with the arrival of a plague which sets about massacring everyone in sight. The story is willing to break your heart after that, as Kindan's friend, Vaxoram, dies in a tear jerking chapter, soon followed by Kindan's love interest and most of her family. The amount of bodies lead to mass graves that the McCafferys describe in tormenting detail, and the point is driven home again and again there is nothing the main characters can do but ease out deaths. The reader remembers the gentle DRAGON SINGER.By the end of the book, you have suffered through so much you don't, unfortunately, know why it was written in the first place; because it's sad for sad's sake, and it doesn't hold up very well.
